Case and death data from Los Angeles and San Diego counties have an additional 1-day lag. Testing data from Los Angeles county have a 1-day lag. Test positivity is based on a 7-day average with no lag. Data is provided by the California Department of Public Health. COVID vaccines save lives. Vaccines are safe and effective for everyone aged 6 months and older. Getting vaccinated is the most powerful tool against hospitalization, serious illness, and death. Deaths Hospitalizations Cases.
An unvaccinated case, hospitalization, or death is one that occurs in a person who has not received a COVID vaccine. This chart uses data from people 5 and older. There is a data lag for these charts. Matching of COVID cases including hospitalizations and deaths and vaccination status happens weekly, contributing to some lag. This compounds with natural reporting lags for cases and hospitalizations, which is larger for deaths. We update these charts on the first Friday of each month.
When we publish these charts, there will be a one month lag. We exclude some recent, incomplete data to accurately reflect trends in the data. The California Department of Public Health has more information about vaccinated cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.
Calculating rates by vaccination and booster status is affected by several factors that make interpretation of recent trends especially difficult. Factors including immunity from prior infection, waning protection related to the amount of time since vaccination, and differences in prevention and testing behaviors by age and vaccination status, have a growing impact on data over time.
